DAYS SINCE THE LIBERALS FAILED TO CONSULT CONSUMERS
LET US QUIT!
The government of Canada is moving ahead with restricting our access to alternative products to cigarettes such as vapes, patches, sprays and pouches that help us quit smoking! They plan to limit our access and ban flavours.
And they are doing all of this without consulting consumers!
The thousands of smokers trying to quit and millions of ex-smokers trying to stay off cigarettes are being left out of policy decisions that profoundly affect our health and wellbeing.
On June 20th, Bill C-69 became law. Deep in the back pages of this legislation, the Minister of Health gained new powers to unilaterally make regulations that make it harder to access nicotine replacement therapies and reduce consumer choice.
This is an insult to every smoker who’s trying to quit—and to every ex-smoker who’s trying hard to stay off cigarettes.
The government is showing how out of touch they are with the struggles of everyday Canadians. These products are a lifeline for many of us. Their decision is bad for public health and is a clear indication that our personal addiction battles are not being considered.
If you think the government should consult consumers before making it harder to quit smoking, join us in the fight for your rights and sign up now!

How to Quit

There are few safe and regulated ways to quit.
According to Health Canada, nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) is an over-the-counter medication that delivers nicotine to your body in small amounts and can help you control cravings.
These alternatives come in limited forms:
01
Nicotine gums, inhalers, lozenges, pouches
-
There are different forms of short-acting NRT including nicotine gums, sprays, inhalers, and lozenges. While patches deliver a steady amount of nicotine to your body throughout the day, these short-acting forms of NRT are intended to help you control your cravings as they appear. For example, if you feel like smoking, you could use nicotine gum to help the craving pass. These short-acting NRT products can be used alone or in combination with nicotine patches.
-
Health Canada has recently authorized a new short-acting NRT called nicotine pouches. A nicotine pouch is a tobacco-free product that is placed between your gum and your cheek. It delivers nicotine to your body temporarily relieving cravings and symptoms of nicotine withdrawal. Only some nicotine pouches have been authorized by Health Canada as natural health products for smoking cessation. Do not use unauthorized nicotine pouches, as they can pose risks to your health.

Nicotine patches
-
Nicotine patches are the only available form of long-acting NRT. Long-acting means that patches deliver a steady dose of nicotine as long as you keep it on for up to 24 hours. Typically, you would apply a patch in the morning when you wake up, wear it all day and night, and replace it with a new one the next morning.

How does it work?
Nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) can help with the difficult withdrawal symptoms and cravings that most people say is their only reason for not giving up tobacco. Using NRT reduces those symptoms.
Many people can quit tobacco without using NRT, but most of those who attempt quitting do not succeed on the first try. In fact, people trying to quit usually need many tries before they’re able to quit for good. Most people who try to quit on their own go back to smoking within the first month of quitting – often because of the withdrawal symptoms. But the good news is that many do succeed. In fact, there are now more people who formerly smoked than people who currently smoke!
Together with counseling or other support, NRT may help increase the number of smokeless tobacco users who quit, too.
You can start using nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) as soon as you throw away your tobacco. You don’t need to wait a certain length of time to put on the patch or start using the gum, pouches, vapes, lozenges, nasal sprays, or inhalers. Double-check this information with the instructions on your chosen method of nicotine replacement, but in general there’s no need to wait to start using NRT.

''I smoked on and off for years and finally quit using Champix. Despite quitting, I still feel the urge to smoke sometimes like when out with smokers or when feeling stressed. I appreciate the variety of alternatives available, like vaping, gums, patches, and tools like pouches. These options have been crucial in helping me resist the temptation to smoke cigarettes in certain situations where I felt weak, providing the support needed to maintain a smoke-free lifestyle. They offer different ways to manage cravings and ease the transition away from smoking.''

''I used to smoke cigarettes for several years, and once I tried quitting I found myself wanting a safer alternative. I had tried to quit before using regular gum or candy, but didn't have success. Once I found alternatives like nicotine gum, pouches, and vaping, I was able to quit cigarettes for good and haven't had one in several years, even when cravings strike. It can be difficult to navigate the social aspects as well as the physical urge to smoke. That is why I appreciate the availability of options like these, which make it easier to maintain a healthier lifestyle and make better choices. ''

''I’ll never forget that chilly, wet evening in late October 2014. I had 4 cigarettes left in my pack. I didn't want to go out in that weather so I thought this would be a good time to think about quitting smoking. I stayed up that evening until I had smoked all 4 cigarettes. The next morning I put the patch on. This was the 3rd and last time I was going to quit. I had a few patches left from my previous attempt to stop. I have not smoked since that October night 10 years ago. And I have never thought of cigarettes again. I am in the Quit Club because I want all smokers to know that nicotine alternatives work. Not everyone can quit cold turkey so the government should be on our side on this, making it as easy as possible to find and purchase whatever nicotine replacement therapies float your boat!''

''I was doing a lot of driving throughout Canada delivering for a company in Indiana. I was a heavy smoker, and I knew I had to quit. While driving on one long haul route, I lit a cigarette and it burned out without even taking a puff. I thought to myself that smoking was a waste of money and I was coughing a lot and knew it was bad for my health. One early morning while getting ready to leave Indiana, I decided to leave my cigarettes in the hotel. I made it home 5 days later and started to crave cigarettes so I bought myself a vape, starting with 14 mg of nicotine and reduced the amount over time down to zero. I still vape but it's not a steady thing. If I didn’t have that vape, I’d be in rough shape today, there’s no doubt about it.''

Springhill, Nova Scotia.

''I quit smoking on May 3th, 2017. I started vaping about a month before that. I just kept vaping more each day as I cut down on my cigarettes. I was going out west to visit my daughter and planned to quit while I was out there, away from all my smoking friends. But I actually quit 2 weeks before I went out! The vape was tasting so much better than the terrible taste of the cigarettes. I vaped different flavors and kept cutting down my nicotine until 3 years later I was vaping with zero nicotine. I just kept on cutting down on the vaping after I knew I would never want a cigarette again. I have been vape-free for the last 3 years. I am really enjoying the freedom and, of course, my health.''

Oxford, Nova Scotia.
What about vaping?
Vaping is not technically considered a nicotine replacement therapy, but many smokers have used various vapes to quit.
According to Health Canada, there are two forms of nicotine commonly used in vaping liquids: freebase nicotine and nicotine salts.
Freebase nicotine
Freebase nicotine is nicotine that has been dissolved in a liquid mixture, typically propylene glycol and/or vegetable glycerin, and other chemicals such as flavouring ingredients. Freebase nicotine products can be used in refill liquids or in cartridges for closed systems.
Nicotine salts
Nicotine salts refer to nicotine that has been dissolved in a liquid mixture that is chemically adjusted to be weakly acidic. Much like free-base nicotine products, these liquids contain propylene glycol and/or vegetable glycerin, as well as other chemicals such as flavouring ingredients.Nicotine salts can be used in refill liquids and in cartridges for closed systems.

Who are we?
We are a growing community of smokers and ex-smokers across Canada who oppose unnecessary government regulations that make it harder for smokers to kick the habit.
We formed this group because we believe that the government’s recent plans to make cessation products harder to access is an insult to every smoker's effort to quit.
Cessation products like gum, vapes, lozenges, pouches, and patches work. These alternatives to cigarettes have saved lives, including our own.
We will never eliminate smoking in Canada if the government stands in the way. The government should be making it easier to quit—not harder.
Quit Club will fight for those who have tried to quit and for those who deserve the ability to quit with effective products.
